NYMBURK 2014
The award was granted by sporting association ACES Europe (cooperates with European Union), whose aim is an application of European policy in the field of sport.
Lukas Vortel,
the member of the evaluation committee of the ACES association, said: „The
title may get merely towns which meet strict conditions. They become a part of
huge family of European towns of sport and it is only up to them, how they deal
with the title. Evaluation of the towns depends on the way, how they use their
sports ground and how they manage to utilize sport as
a way of improving health of inhabitants. “
Nymburk got the title mainly for its long-term attempts of supporting sport in all aspects. In this category is annually awarded approximately 30 towns in Europe.
“During the competition we showed the evaluation committee our sports facilities, the most important sport grounds and historical sights. Commissioners visited elementary schools, the ice rink, sport ground Veslak, Sporting centre Nymburk and Addiction-service centre. They were interested in the integration of handicapped citizens and so on. We had to meet a lot of conditions. Commissioners evaluated for example the policy of using sport to improve the standard of living citizens” confirmed mayor of the town Milos Petera. Nymburk is definitely the town of sport. According to guess do the sports more than 60% of citizens. A great traditions have basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, rowing, canoeing, football, athletics and swimming.
„This title involved our town into the net of European towns with the same award and allowed us to exchange information and experiences effectively,“ claimed Milos Petera. Nymburk invests in support of sport annually approximately 15 milions crowns.
We also prepare the modernization of sports complex, which costs about 1 billion crowns. The sports complex should become Olympic centre for preparation of representatives. Moreover it should be available to public.
„The award is primarily obligation to continuing support of sporting activities in our town,” summarized Milos Petera.
The title The European Town of Sport got Nachod and Liberec in 2012. In 2013 Nymburk and Ostrava. Praha applies for the title The Capital of Sport 2016.
